Finalising the Design Brief

Once you’ve collated your assets and completed your research, it’s time to finalise your brief. A clear brief is valuable in all situations - whether you’re designing yourself, briefing a designer, or pitching an idea to a client or manager.

1. Designing for Yourself

Even if you’re doing the design yourself, a design brief helps keep you focused. It captures your objectives, target audience, visual references, assets, and deliverables all in one place. This prevents wasted time and ensures your design stays aligned with your original goals.

2. Briefing a Designer

Even as you gain more experience, you’ll encounter projects that require more specialised design skills, like product packaging. A clear brief ensures the designer understands your vision, including style, tone, colours, layouts, and any essential references like Pinterest boards or mood boards. This reduces back-and-forth and keeps the project on track.

3. Pitching a Client or Manager

When presenting an idea to a client or manager, a brief helps communicate your vision clearly and professionally. It shows that your concept is well thought out, backed by research, and aligned with the project’s objectives. Including visual references, target audience insights, and key messaging makes your pitch more persuasive and easier to approve.
